13, 2008 - UA BEATS OLENTANGY, COFFMAN NEXT
The nationally ranked Upper Arlington Golden Bears remained
unbeaten Saturday night with a first-ever win over Olentangy,
14-4, handing the Braves their first loss of the year
in five games.
The game was the Bears inaugural varsity match-up with
Olentangy which fell victim to a productive UA offense
that
found scoring from 11 different players including close
defenseman Jon VandeWerken.
"I was pretty pleased with the way we dispered
the ball," said UA Head Coach Ted Wolford, who
has won 10 state
titles in 16 years as the Golden Bear boss. "We
played pretty well except for some man down goals. Adam
(Donahue) led
us with three goals and I think we showed a real unselfish
attitude on offense."
The Bears played 37 out of the 38 players on the roster.
Senior captain Alex Benedick had 7 saves in the game
while
junior Teddy Dugger had one.
The
development of the 2008 Bears continues to be a work
in process. "We're getting better and there have
been
a lot of coaching situations and teaching opportunities
along the way," said Wolford. "It's an on-going
process with kids
that haven't really been in every situation yet."
This year's team is ranked 15th nationally in the STX/Inside
Lacrosse poll and carries that target into every game
though Wolford discounts the accuracy of such polls
this early in the season. "Early in the year those
are distractions.
Those rankings went on the board before we ever chose
our team. As long as we are working hard...I'm concerned
with the way we're playing."
The Bears are 4-0 and gear up for conference and regional
opponent Dublin Coffman Wednesday night at Marv Moorehead
Stadium.
The
Shamrocks are 4-2 on the season including two out of
three wins on a season-opening road trip to Nashville,
Tennessee. Since returning, Coffman has beaten Hilliard
Davidson, 11-4, lost to Worthington Kilbourne, 16-7
and defeated Pittsburgh Central Catholic, 4-2 on Saturday
night.
"Obviously this is an OCC game and a regional opponent,"
added Wolford. "It's important that we keep those
records intact. This will be more of a test for us."
