May
18, 2008 - UA GOES 1-1 AT MIDWEST TOURNEY
The
15-3 Upper Arlington High School mens lacrosse team
went 1-1 at the 2008 Midwest Scholastic Lacrosse Coaches
Association tournament near Detroit, falling to top-seeded
Brother Rice, 9-6 on Saturday, the Bears second loss
this season to the Warriors. UA played Worthington Kilbourne
in the consolation or third-place game Sunday and defeated
the Wolves, 11-7, its second win of the season over
its riavl from Central Ohio.
Regarding the game against Brother Rice, UA Head Coach
Ted Wolford said, "I thought we were ready. We
scored the first goal. But after that we never could
get into a rhythm. We fought hard in the fourth quarter
to really make it respectable but couldn't find a rhythm
on offense and on defense we had too many fouls and
gave up too many man-up goals.
Wolford said Rice had a lot to do with that. "Rice
is a good team...it's not just us...we were playing
again in that hostile environment on their home field...
Sunday afternoon the Bears rebounded with a second straight
win over Kilbourne. "We started the scoring first,"
said Wolford. "but it went back and forth until
4-all and then we pulled away. We scored six straight
goals and led
11-4 before Kilbourne scored the final three goals in
the last 5 minutes."
Wolford believes the two regular season wins over the
Wolves mean nothing now that the state tournament looms
Saturday May 24th though the Golden Bears will have
a first round bye until Wednesday May 28th when they'll
meet
the Dublin Coffman-Toledo St. John's winner.
UA is the top seed in Div. I, Region one while Kilbourne
is the top seed in Div. I, Region two. The two teams
can only
meet in the state title game to be played Saturday June
7th at Dublin Coffman.
"On any given day if you're not on your 'A' game...they
(Kilbourne) have got good shooters. You can bury the
first two
and begin to concentrate on each step along the way
because it's one and done."
How will the Bears use the next 10 days in preparation
for the Ohio High School Lacrosse Association tournament
?
"We will concentrate on shooting and do more scrimmaging
in practice. We will get more reps and make things competitive.
We still need to get better and other teams we face
will change things from a strategy standpoint. So we
will have to be sharp on all points of our game. We
are ready to start season four."
